ABARES Publishes Biochar Report

The Australian Bureai of Agricultrual and Resource Economics and Sciences has published its report on Biochar, entitled Biochar: Implications for Agricultural Productivity. The report outlines the production methods, uses and potential benefits and risks of biochar and features contributions from several key industry figures.
 

Federal Government Invests $2 million in Biochar Research

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, today announced $2 million in competitive grants for biochar research, under the Australian Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative.

Minister Ludwig said the Biochar Capacity Building Program will help attract further research from scientists and independent experts and significantly expand knowledge of biochar and identify potential opportunities for landholders.

Applications are now open with further information, including application forms, available at www.daff.gov.au/climatechange/cfi/biochar.

Australia Passes CO2 Offset Laws, Carbon Pricing Next

The Australian parliament endorsed the world's first national scheme that regulates the creation and trade of carbon credits from farming and forestry on Monday, to complement government plans to put a price on carbon emissions from mid-2012.

Biochar Project Awarded at UTAS Science Awards

Congratulations go to Jack Dunn, Year 9 student at Launceston Church Grammar School. Jack's Agrichar^TM pot trials took out top honours at the 2011 UTAS Science Investigation Awards whilst raising the profile of biochar in the region.

'Securing a Clean Energy Future'

The Australian Government, on 10th July 2011, announced a comprehensive plan for tackling climate change titled, Securing a Clean Energy Future. This plan will see Australia cut 159 million tonnes per annum of carbon pollution from our atmosphere by 2020.

The Carbon Farming Futures program will see $429 million over six years made available including for research into new ways of storing carbon and reducing pollution on the land - such as through the production and application of biochar.
